Gunnell Hickman, Jr.’s Bio
Hello, my name is Gunnell Hickman, Jr. I was born in Beckley, WV, then raised in Oak Hill, WV. I graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1994, and furthered my education by playing college basketball for Garrett Community College in Maryland and then Ohio Southern University in Ironton, OH.
I am a proud father of my children, as they spur me to do better and inspire me to make a difference in our part of the world. I have learned to appreciate life and its wonderful moments by embracing my role as a true father and family man. My sacrifices in a family has shown me the strengths I have, as well as the weaknesses I needed to work on. I wish to provide a safer and stronger environment for my children by being a strong community-driven citizen and small business owner. I have also established myself in the community as a traveling basketball team coach for nearly a decade. I am currently the Middle School Boys Coach at St. Joe Middle School and the coach for the WV Thunder AAU Girl's traveling basketball team.
I began my cooking career at The Heritage Station in 1996 and continued honing my skills and developing my unique point of view through positions at Chili Wilis, Holiday Inn, The Blackhawk Grille, 21 @ the Frederick, Embassy Suites and finishing up as the Food Service Director at Heritage Nursing Home.
My evolution as a Chef has been motivated by my children and as a result of working for other companies. I have realize I want to give back in another way, showcasing my point of view, skills and arsenal in a locally sourced and more nutrient-dense way. I am hoping to provide lunches to local employees for local businesses and eventually incorporate delivery services downtown. I am also excited about the catering side to my business, I enjoy allowing my creativity and expanded view of food to lead me into a progressive future in food service.
